The Importance of Boundaries: A Hard-Learned Lesson for Creatives
Boundaries—simple in theory, yet often one of the hardest lessons to truly embrace. In the busy world of running a creative business, it’s easy to let lines blur between work and personal life, especially when passion fuels our careers. Recently, I was reminded of the importance of setting boundaries, and while the lesson wasn’t new, it was one I had forgotten—and it hit home hard.
Why Boundaries Matter
A friend once told me, “You’ve probably forgotten more about running a dance school than most will ever learn.” While that might be true, it doesn’t mean I always get it right. One of my biggest struggles hasn’t been my business or competitors—it’s been me. Without clear boundaries, I let the pressures of work seep into every moment, leaving little room for balance or peace.
Learning the Hard Way
After my second pregnancy, I decided to slow down and focus on my family. While my dance school continued to run smoothly, growth stalled because I wasn’t giving it my full energy. When I returned, the competition was fiercer than ever, and I felt the pressure to be available 24/7.
One weekend, I realized just how out of control things had become. Instead of spending time with my family, I found myself glued to my phone, responding to messages and emails. My boundaries had vanished, and it wasn’t sustainable—for my business or my well-being.
Setting—and Sticking to—Boundaries
Boundaries are essential for maintaining both a healthy work-life balance and a thriving business. When I started my school, I switched off by 8:30 p.m. If someone needed a response, they waited until regular working hours. But over time, I let these limits slip, thinking every message was urgent.
Now, I’m stricter with myself:
I don’t check work-related messages after 8:30 p.m.
My phone stays out of the bedroom.
Weekends are reserved for family time.
It’s not easy, and I’ve had slip-ups, but every time I reset my boundaries, it gets a little easier.
The Benefits of Boundaries
Since re-establishing clear limits, I’ve seen incredible results. My school grew from 22 students to over 360 in just four years. The truth is, boundaries didn’t hinder my growth—they fueled it. Taking care of yourself and setting expectations doesn’t make you less professional; it makes you a better leader.
Take Action
If you’re struggling with boundaries, start small. Write down your non-negotiables and hold yourself accountable. Your time and energy are valuable—treat them as such.
Let this be your reminder: boundaries don’t limit your success; they empower it.
