Do You Have What It Takes to Be a Performer?

What does it take to be a performer? Is it flawless technique? Undeniable talent? A natural ability?

Actually, it’s none of those things. While having talent, technique, and a natural flair for performing can help, they don’t determine success. You can be the most skilled performer in the room and still not get work. I’ve seen people who weren’t as technical or naturally gifted consistently book more roles. Let’s explore why.

What It Takes:

Passion!
Performers need passion! Let’s face it—you likely started pursuing this career because you love it. Keeping that spark alive is crucial. Being a performer is one of the best jobs in the world (if I do say so myself), but it’s also one of the most challenging. Rejection, criticism, and setbacks are par for the course, and passion is what fuels your resilience to overcome them and achieve your goals.

Great Work Ethic
It goes without saying that a strong work ethic is key. Early in your career, this might mean juggling multiple side hustles to support your performing aspirations. For instance, in my first two years post-graduation, I held eight side jobs while auditioning and building my resume. Hard work will help you grow, build connections, and seize opportunities. It’s true—hard work beats talent every time!

A Proactive Approach
As a performer, you’re essentially your own boss. This might sound freeing, but it comes with significant responsibilities. No one will tell you when to rehearse, network, or look for auditions. Success comes to those who make their own opportunities, continue learning, and push their limits. The performers who thrive are the ones who don’t wait for the waves—they create them.

Professionalism & Personality
When casting teams make decisions, they look beyond talent. Are you on time? Prepared? Easy to work with? Being professional and kind goes a long way in this industry. Casting directors, crew members, and fellow performers notice those who are respectful, supportive, and dedicated. Think about the type of person you’d want on your team—and strive to be that person.

Performers aren’t just skilled artists; they’re lifelong learners, disciplined workers, and resilient individuals. They’re empathetic, passionate, and committed. So, do you have what it takes to be a performer?
